Physics Dictionary
The modern world is a challenging place. To meet those challenges, the students of today have to prepare themselves and apply themselves to learning an ever increasing body of knowledge. This can be difficult, especially when the best texts and academic publications are written in the international language, English – a second language to most students in Cambodia.
It is the goal of Zaman International School (ZIS) to provide students with the best possible educational opportunities. Rounded education – both academic and personal development – is the priorities at our school. We want students not to view learning as a chore, but as something that comes naturally, that satisfies their natural curiosity.
It is for the above reasons that ZIS has attempted to provide Khmer students with a bilingual Physics dictionary. Physics was chosen because of its difficult technical vocabulary and conceptual ideas, which, for students learning the subject in a language other than their own, makes Physics doubly difficult. The goal of this project is to assist students of Physics to learn the subject matter more easily and quickly. To our knowledge, this is the first such dictionary aimed at Khmer high school students.
This dictionary is not solely written for the students at ZIS. We hope that Khmer students of physics everywhere will find it a useful learning aid.
I am most grateful to colleague, working as a Physics teacher in our school Mr Koy Hen who has not only made extremely useful suggestions but also given the dictionary a thorough proofreading. It is thanks to his meticulous care and painstaking exactness that the dictionary has taken its present form.
My greatest debt is to Ms Monika Lavan (Grade 12 Student), who has worked hard to make the dictionary a reality. Furthermore, she has typed and checked all words with remarkable patience, pointing out errors which might have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Over the next few years, I expect the dictionary to be expanded and improved, as feedback from students and instructors guides us as to what is needed and what is not.
I hope that this dictionary will make your understanding of physics a little easier. However, it is a work in progress, and your ideas and opinions on how to improve it are most welcome. Finally, I would like to express my appreciations to our school administration. Without their support and encouragement, this dictionary would never have been completed.
